Critical oxygen pressure

Description

The critical oxygen pressure, p_c, is defined as the partial oxygen pressure, p_O2, below which aerobic catabolism (respiration or oxygen consumption) declines significantly. If anaerobic catabolism is activated simultaneously to compensate for lower aerobic ATP generation, then the limiting oxygen pressure, p_l, is equal to the p_c. In many cases, however, the p_l is substantially lower than the p_c.
