Abstract: Every cell in living organisms depends on adenosine triphosphate (ATP) as a primary energy source required for biochemical and physiological processes. Mitochondria are the most important organelles for energy production by generating ATP through the electron transport chain (ETC) located in the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM). Via the food we eat, especially carbohydrates and lipids, substrates for mitochondria are provided that can be used for ATP production. These substrates are mainly degraded in the mitochondrial matrix, the center of mitochondria that is surrounded by the IMM.
