Breaking of Glass Barrels

Question:

We have some problems with the reference electrode of the tpp+ system. We already broke 3 of them and we still have only two.... what is wrong? because we use them very carefully.

Answer:

It is unfortunately quite common for a new user to break some glass barrels of the reference electrode. Experience shows that after some practice reference electrodes can be used for many months without breaking one, even when several ISE systems are in operation simultaneously. While this information may be encouraging it is of limited practical help, so here are some hints:

  • The glass barrel of the reference electrode is most prone to break while inserted into the TPP stopper. That is because most of its length is fixed by the stopper bore and a small force on the top of the reference electrode creates a huge lever effect to break the glass barrel. Therefore:
  • Always insert the reference electrode after the TPP electrode and remove it before the TPP electrode. This avoids having to work in the "danger zone" while the reference electrode is inserted.
  • When the reference electrode is inserted into the stopper make a conscious afford to stay away from the top of the stopper (with elbows, etc...). This will get a habit after some time.
  • When inserting and removing the reference electrode make sure to move the electrode very straight up and down.

An explanation: It would have been quite easy to use a flexible barrel for the referecne electtode. This would have caused two problems: a.) oxygen storage capacity (higher instrumental O2 background flux) and b.) carry over of hydrophobic inhibitors: Hydrophobic substances are feeling very comfortable in SOFT plastic materials. Since eth glass barrels are easy to replace, quite affordable and easy to wash, we decided in their favor. The problems that the quite small TPP membrane (that has to be from soft plastic) can cause with carry over of hydrophobic inhibitors have shown this decision to be correct.

The above assumes that your barrels were breaking at the point where the enter the stopper. If they are breaking be contact with the moving stirrer the volume calibration of the stopper is wrong and should be checked. --Fasching Mario 09:24, 19 March 2012 (CET)
