Abstract: Itaconic acid, matrix substrate-level phosphorylation (SLP) and macrophages represent the main focus of this thesis. From a more general point of view, it is about immune cell specific metabolism. Usually, metabolism is viewed as the function of cells generating a store of energy by catabolism, and to synthesizing macromolecules for cell maintenance and growth through anabolic pathways. However, today we know that there are some disorders, such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, cancer, inflammatory conditions, in which there are obvious dysfunctions in metabolism. ...
