Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the inclusiveness target countries (ITC) which joined the COST Action CA15203 MitoEAGLE in October 2018. A long transitional after-war period resulted in marginalization of science and slow development of academic and scientific research network in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The lack of top experts and permanent โ€˜โ€™brain drainโ€™โ€™ explains why most Bosnian scientists apply only for limited national grants and have no chance to get some international grants because they are not sufficiently competitive compared to other West European research teams.

The main goal of joining the COST Action MitoEAGLE is to engage in international and multidisciplinary collaborations that could be helpful in establishing high-level performance of the research group at the home institution. This multidisciplinary group will include experienced researchers from the human molecular genetics and cardiovascular fields. The aims of this group will be: introduction of novel methods for studying the role of noncoding RNAs in cardiovascular disease and mitochondrial function, either by regulating mitochondrial or nuclear genes that are known to influence mitochondrial function. Building such an interdisciplinary group will represent a significant result of the COST Action and will contribute to its goal to share knowledge and expertise. All involved institutions will gain experience and visibility by international and multidisciplinary collaborations.

In conclusion, joining to the COST Action MitoEAGLE can open an opportunity particularly for young scientists to discover different ways to lead a scientific group and establish collaborations for future professional projects. As a result, early career researchers can create their own international network that will improve their future professional development and strengthen contacts between academic and industrial partners as a driving force for innovation. This will improve the skills of students and researchers to plan suitable outreach activities to the general public towards a better understanding of research and its implications on knowledge, society, and science development.
